Square's MarketMan Add-On vs Parly for One Cafe
Mark, founder of Parly·October 18, 2026·9 min read
Near the bottom of Square's restaurant pricing table there is a row that reads "$99/mo. per location." Under it, in small type: "Pricing applicable for customers new to MarketMan." I run a cafe on Square and I build a rival to that row, so weigh what follows with that in hand. Every Square fact below was checked on Square's own pages on October 18, 2026.
ℹ The short answer
Square Restaurant Inventory by MarketMan is MarketMan's ingredient inventory, sold and billed inside Square. It is $99 a month per location on top of Square Plus ($49) or Square Premium ($149), so $148 a month for one cafe starting from Plus, and it is set up through Square's sales team. It is the right buy for several locations or a week full of invoices. For one cafe whose drinks run on milk swaps, Parly is $59 a month on any Square plan and starts the same morning.
What Square's MarketMan add-on is
It is MarketMan's inventory product with Square's name on it, launched on April 2, 2026 with Square sign-in, one Square bill and Square support. Square's help center calls it "a third-party integration" (support article 8610, checked October 18, 2026).
In Square's own feature list (product page, checked October 18, 2026), it builds purchase orders from par levels and usage, reads a photo of an invoice to update stock and costs, compares vendor prices, logs waste, compares what you should have used against what you did, and moves stock between sites. It pulls your sales from Square, and "Menu changes in POS automatically update in inventory."
It is not Square Recipes. That is Square's own ingredient feature, still a beta, and its help page says it is for "Square for Restaurants Plus or Premium subscribers only," the older name for the plans Square now calls Square Plus and Square Premium. It is a different product with tighter limits (support article 8629, checked October 18, 2026).
What it costs one cafe, by the plan you are on
$99 a month per location, on top of Square Plus at $49 or Square Premium at $149. It is not offered on Square Free: the add-on row on Square's pricing table shows a dash in the Free column (checked October 18, 2026).
What you actually pay depends on where you start.
| You are on | The add-on adds | Your monthly total |
|---|---|---|
| Square Free | not available until you move to Plus | $148 |
| Square Plus ($49) | $99 | $148 |
| Square Premium ($149) | $99 | $248 |
| MarketMan direct, for reference | Starter, bought from MarketMan | $249 |
The MarketMan figure is from MarketMan's pricing page, checked October 18, 2026. So if you have already decided you want MarketMan, buying it through Square is $101 a month cheaper than its own entry plan.
The terms are plain. Square's FAQ says it is "month-to-month with no long-term commitment required," with no setup fees and no per-user charges. Two catches. The price is "only available for sellers new to MarketMan," and Square does not say what an existing MarketMan customer pays. And Square Plus already includes vendor profiles and purchase orders for the items in your catalog, so part of what the add-on sells is something a Plus cafe already has. What the $99 adds is ingredients, recipes, invoice scanning and the multi-site view.
How you turn it on
Through Square's sales team, not a switch in your dashboard. The "Get started" buttons on the product page lead to the Square Plus or Premium signup. The add-on itself sits behind "Contact sales," and Square's help center says "Reach out to your Account Manager to find out how Square Restaurants Inventory can integrate with your Square POS" (support article 8610, checked October 18, 2026).
Then there is setup. Square's FAQ says "Most restaurants are up and running within 2-3 weeks," with an onboarding team that creates your inventory items and maps your menu, and training included. Deliveries get checked in from a tablet's web browser.
For a group opening its fourth shop, an onboarding team is a feature. For one owner who wanted the oat milk order sorted this week, it is a sales call and two or three weeks of someone else learning your menu.
What it does well
Invoices, batched prep and several locations, which is what it was built around. MarketMan prices its own plans around invoice scans: 50 a month on Starter, unlimited on Growth (MarketMan pricing, checked October 18, 2026). Square says the add-on tracks batch recipes, so the simple syrup you cook down and the cold brew you steep overnight can come off the shelf as drinks sell, which Square Recipes cannot do. One bill and one support line is a real comfort, and stock transfers between sites are something a single-cafe app will not give you.
The launch customer tells you who it was designed around: Pine State Biscuits, six locations, quoted in Square's release. Square's own help center pitches it at "a high-volume restaurant or multiple locations," while the product page calls it "perfect for both single and multi-location operations." If you are weighing how much of that machinery one cafe would ever run, this is the longer version of that question.
Where a drink menu should test it
Square says it tracks modifiers. Its pages do not say how a swap comes off the shelf. The FAQ lists "ingredients, batch-recipes, production cycles, and modifiers" (checked October 18, 2026), and that is as far as the public pages go.
An oat swap is a replacement: the whole milk the recipe expected stays in the fridge, and the same volume of oat leaves it. An extra shot is an addition. A large is usually a variation in Square, not a modifier (Square's own example of variations is Small, Medium, Large), and Square Recipes cannot put a recipe on a multi-variation item at all. A tool that adds the oat on top of the base recipe counts whole milk that never left the fridge, and your Friday count drifts a little further every day. The swap mechanics are worked through here, and why a latte breaks item-level tracking is the longer background.
One dated data point, weighed fairly. In June 2025, before the Square version existed, a coffee shop owner on Square's Seller Community using MarketMan direct wrote that "A latte can have different milks, espresso types, and modifiers, but MarketMan struggles to handle these variations without a fixed recipe." That is one owner, on the older product. It is a reason to ask, not a verdict. I could not find a single independent review of the Square version as of October 18, 2026.
💡 The one demo question
"We sold 47 iced matcha lattes this morning. Twelve were swapped to whole milk at the register. How much oat milk is left?" An answer in ounces, with the twelve taken out of the oat line, settles it.
How Parly handles the one-cafe case
I built Parly behind the bar of my own cafe, for exactly this shop: one location, on Square, with a drink menu that runs on milks, shots and sizes.
Connect your Square and every ticket comes in with its modifiers, read-only. Sales times recipes give what each drink used, so 47 iced matcha lattes become 94 g of matcha, 564 oz of oat milk and 47 cups. A swap to whole milk takes the oat back out and puts the whole milk in. A large uses a large's recipe.
You count on a phone, one category at a time, with last time's number beside each item. The latest count is what is on the shelf; what you used since comes from sales. Out of those two, Parly builds one suggested order per supplier, sized to cover until that supplier's next delivery and due before its cutoff. The dairy order shows up ahead of its afternoon cutoff and the paper goods ahead of a late-morning one. You check each order and send it. Parly never places one on its own.
You start it yourself. Sign up, connect Square with your owner login, and your menu and last 30 days of sales come in on their own. You can count the same morning. Ordering starts once your drinks have recipes, and you are the one who adds them, not an onboarding team. It is $59 a month, or $49 a month billed yearly, on any Square plan, with 14 days free and no card.
| Square's MarketMan add-on | Parly | |
|---|---|---|
| Price for one cafe | $99 on top of Square Plus ($49) or Premium ($149) | $59, or $49 billed yearly, on any Square plan |
| On Square Free | not available | works |
| How you start | contact sales, then about 2 to 3 weeks of onboarding | sign up, connect Square, count the same day |
| A milk swap | Square says it tracks modifiers; ask to see one | read off the ticket: oat replaces whole milk |
| Ordering | purchase orders from pars and usage | one order per supplier, due before its cutoff, you confirm |
| Invoices | photo scanning and vendor price tracking | reads an invoice to update a pack cost, and stops there |
| Locations | several, with transfers | one |
| Commitment | month to month | month to month or yearly, cancel from Billing |
Square facts as checked on Square's pages, October 18, 2026. Parly's limits are in the table on purpose. It runs one cafe, with no second-store view. It does not scan a stack of invoices, pay bills or close your month. For the full side by side with MarketMan bought direct, here is the comparison page.
When the add-on is the right buy, and when it is not
Buy it if you run more than one location or invoices are the hard part of your week. Look elsewhere if you are one cafe whose drinks run on milk swaps and you want to start this week.
| The add-on is the right buy | Look elsewhere |
|---|---|
| You run two shops, or open a second soon | You run one cafe and plan to stay one |
| Invoices pile up and closing the month eats an evening | Your invoices are six or eight a week, several of them milk |
| You are on Square Plus already and want batch recipes on one Square bill | You are on Square Free with no other reason to pay for Plus |
| You want an onboarding team to set it up | You want to count tomorrow morning |
| Someone shows you an oat swap coming off the oat line | Nobody can demo the swap |
If your menu is mostly plain drinks and bagged beans, Square Recipes may be all you need, within its documented limits. For every app that connects to Square, scored on the same swap question with dated prices, see the full list.
Questions owners ask
How much does Square Restaurant Inventory by MarketMan cost?
$99 a month per location, on top of Square Plus at $49 or Square Premium at $149, so $148 a month for one cafe on Plus. The price applies to sellers new to MarketMan (Square's product and pricing pages, checked October 18, 2026).
Can I use it on Square Free?
No. Square's pricing table lists the add-on for Square Plus and Square Premium only, with a dash in the Free column (checked October 18, 2026).
Is there a contract?
Square's FAQ says it is month to month with no long-term commitment, no setup fees and no per-user charges (checked October 18, 2026).
Does it track oat milk swaps?
Square says it tracks modifiers. Its pages do not show how a swap is applied, so ask for a demo of an oat swap on a latte and watch where the oat comes off. Square Recipes, the native beta, does not track modifiers at all, by Square's own documentation.
What to send Square before you book the call
Paste this into Square's contact form, or read it to your account manager.
- Show me an oat swap on a latte coming off the oat line, not added on top of the whole milk.
- My sizes are variations in Square. How do recipes attach to each size?
- Who maps my menu, and how many days until my first count?
- Is there a trial on the add-on itself, or only the 30-day trial on Square Plus?
- I have one location. What is my all-in monthly price, and how do I cancel?
Whatever you pick, add-on or mine, count on Monday, compare its Friday number with the shelf, and if the oat line will not close, this is where to look first.
